Gladys Aylward: The Little Woman: A solitary woman. A foreign country. An unknown language. With no mission board to support or guide her and less than ten dollars in her pocket, Gladys Aylward left her home in England to answer God’s call to take the message of the gospel to China. With the Sino-Japanese War waging around her, she struggled to bring the basics of life and the fullness of God to orphaned children. Time after time, God triumphed over impossible situations, and drew people to Himself. The Little Woman tells the story of one woman’s determination to serve God at any cost. With God all things are possible!

Shadow of the Almighty: Originally published in 1958, this modern classic has been inspiring and challenging Christians for generations! Based on Jim Elliot’s revealing diaries and his wife’s own experiences, this moving memoir shares the story of the life and martyrdom of five missionaries at the hands of the Ecuadorian Huaroni tribe in 1956. Includes photographs. 272 pages, hardcover from Hendrickson.

Saint in the Wilderness: Robert Sheffey was an American circuit-riding preacher of the 19th century. The book tells the true story of this unique servant of God, who started as a rowdy young man, and followed his friends to a revival meeting and there found the Lord. A man of prayer, tireless service, and great compassion. Brother Sheffey rides through the Appalachian Mountains spreading the gospel. Although he suffers the loss of his two greatest earthly treasures in one day, Sheffey still finds forgiveness in his heart for the person who caused his sorrow. It captures the warmth and compassion of a man whose soul was on fire for the Lord.  A DVD by BJU ShowForth, called Sheffey, dramatized the life of this preacher on film as well.

Evidence Not Seen: This volume recalls the life of missionary Darlene Diebler Rose.  As a young newlywed, Darlene moves to Papua New Guinea to tell others of Jesus Christ.  In short order, Darlene and her husband become prisoners of war and endure immense trials.  The reader is shown greater dependence and yieldedness to the Savior with each step Darlene takes.  This account is truly convicting and stirring for every believer.

To the Golden Shore: This is the life story of pioneer missionary Adoniram Judson.  This book recalls the immense struggles Mr. Judson faced on the field of Burma and how he continued serving the Lord (in the midst of a time in prison for his faith and the passing of some of his own family).  This book comes as a paper back and is about 500 pages.  Don’t be discouraged by the slow nature of the beginning of the book.  Once Mr. Judson reaches Burma the book picks up the pace.

More Precious Than Gold: This book is written by John & Brenda Vaughn.  It retells their own story as a young church planting family who endure a surprising fire in their home.  Brenda, and their daughter Becky, suffered signficant burns over much of their body.  This is a profoundly moving account of how God took one family’s fiery ordeal and truned it into something of eternal value.  You will be challenged by the Vaughns’ deep assurance that God can transform the most devastating circumstances into gold.
