4 Faulty Arguments Against Preserving Life

Through the years, I have seen others receive things because of someone else.  For example:

  • A teenage friend got a new car because their parents bought it for them.

  • A college friend got an incredible job because their father had connections in the business world.

  • A 20-something friend bought a home because he received an inheritance.

  • A middle-aged friend received a free vacation because of the points earned at hotels and airlines on business trips.

  • A friend or two inherited great genetics from their parents with high metabolism and good physical health.

The truth is, whether good or bad, most of us have received something we have because of someone else.  Yet, we often look at what others have and miss what we already possess!  We must not overlook the riches we have because of Jesus.

Consider what we have because of Jesus!

1.     1:3 – We have divine blessings

2.     1:4 – We have been chosen by God Himself

3.     1:5 – We have been adopted by Jesus

4.     1:6 – We are accepted by God

5.     1:7 – We have redemption through Jesus

…Jesus bought us back from the slavery of sin!

6.     1:7-8 – We have the riches of grace

7.     1:11 – We have a God given inheritance

8.     1:12 – All of these due to trusting jesus!

9.     1:15-16 – faith and love yields thanksgiving

This is what the church has because of Jesus!  This is what we sometimes lose sight of when overcome with the stresses of this temporary life on earth.  This is what we miss when we make selfish choices!  THIS IS THE LIFE GOD MADE AVAILABLE TO ALL WHO ACCEPT HIS SAVING GRACE!

Anything else we receive as earthly treasures is simply pale in comparison.  You and I have great riches because of Jesus…so, how could we possibly choose to abort a baby that God chose to sacrifice so much for – and give so much too?!  How could we possibly reason that the murder of one human being is justifiable in certain situations when Exodus 20:13 says point blank, “thou shalt not kill” … when Psalm 127:3 declares that children are a reward from God…and when Proverbs 6:17 points out that God hates the hands that shed innocent blood.  Abortion is a matter of life or death of a human being made in God’s image (Gen. 1:26-27; 9:6).

Did you know the statistics of killing babies in the world today? (Source for info below)

  • 930,160 abortions in the US in 2020 (increase of 8% from 2017)  (73,000,000 worldwide by WHO data)*

  • US Birthrate decreased 6% since 2017

  • 20.6% of pregnancies were aborted in 2020 (US) (29% worldwide WHO data)

  • 53% of US abortions are from medication (non-surgical)

  • The World Health Organization does not count the 73 million abortions in 2019 as deaths in their accounting of the 55.4 million worldwide deaths in 2019.

How have we come to this?  We sometimes do it through faulty reasoning we believe to be compassionate.  Consider these examples:

“Abortion is okay in the case of rape.”

Rape is a horrific act.  It is wicked and evil, to be sure!  However, why would we carry out a death sentence on the incident baby to respond to the evil act of rape?  Do we justify killing another person in any other situation because we do not want them in our lives…or because we did not ask them to be a part of our lives…or because they remind us of things we do not want to remember?

“Abortion is okay when the life of the mother is in jeopardy.”

According to abortionfacts.com, such a situation is less than 1%.  In fact, it is the conservative estimate that .017% of all abortions are because the life of the mother is in jeopardy.  So why is this a significant reason given among many conservatives and the church?  What about early delivery to protect the mother and stabilize the baby with advanced healthcare options?  Why is killing an incident human being the go-to healthcare option?  Why are some slow to trust God in this area?

Pam was diagnosed with amoebic dysentery and had to take strong drugs to treat the disease. However, complications arose when she became pregnant with her son. She was even told that getting an abortion would be the only way to save her life.

Pam chose to keep her son.  His name on the birth certificate is Tim Tebow.  Tim wrote in his book, Through My Eyes, "According to [the doctor], the ‘mass of fetal tissue’ or ‘tumor’—me—had to go.”

Pam refused to have an abortion and prayed for guidance. She ended up giving birth and God preserved her life and her son’s life!

Sometimes our reasoning is less compassionate and more selfishness, like:

“Abortion is necessary healthcare. I cannot afford a baby.  I do not want a baby right now.”

These are viable concerns; however, why is this not addressed before the act of conceiving a child?  The truth is, many who fight for the ability to have abortions would not need abortions if they simply abstained from fornication, adultery, and all immoral behaviors. God intended this beautiful act to be within the marriage relationship only!  But we must also remember that abortion is not the ONLY option as the others would have us to believe!  Adoption is a wonderful opportunity for the mother, the child, and for loving parents who cannot conceive.

In one of his interviews, the actor Jack Nicholson revealed that he was against abortion. The reporter asked why. Jack revealed that his own mother was faced with that choice, and she ultimately decided against it.

“My only emotion is gratitude, literally, for my life. [If my mother and grandmother had been] of less character, I never would have gotten to live. These women gave me the gift of life,” he said.

“Abortion is necessary because some children are deformed and severely handicapped.”

Did you know there are many testimonies out there of mothers who were advised to get an abortion because the doctor said scans revealed the baby was severely handicapped or worse, but when the baby was born, the child was perfectly healthy?  I also realize that other babies are born severely handicapped, but they were still created in the image of God!  If we use this line of reasoning, who gets to decide who is healthy enough to live?! Is not the adult who becomes significantly unwell, or deformed through tragic circumstances, also then in danger of someone declaring they too do not deserve to live?

In fact, on December 4, 2022, Fox News reported that Paralympian veteran Christine Gauthier received in writing from the Canadian Veteran Affairs office the offer of a medically assisted suicide kit when she sought to have a wheelchair lift installed in her home.  The Canadian VA denied her help with the lift but offered the MAID (medically assisted in dying) kit instead.  Assisted suicide has been legal in Canada since 2016.

So, praY for:

1.     Ephesians 1:17 – Wisdom and knowledge of your great God

2.     Ephesians 1:18 – Your eyes to be opened to the hope & riches in Jesus

3.     Ephesians 1:19-21 – Understanding the immeasurable greatness of God

…so great that He raiseD Jesus from the dead…and since God is able to raise up Jesus from the dead, can He not intervene here too?
